"I met John Cage in 1949 for two days. He was staying at the same hotel. He introduced himself to me, and I didn’t know who he was then; but a friend of mine said, he’s one of the new music people. I showed him one of my first abstract things, and he was the first to make me feel like maybe I could do something."

Happy birthday, Jasper Johns! He was born this day in 1930.
During the 60s, Johns was a set designer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and his first project was for the 1968 dance, Walkaround Time. He created seven inflatable plastic boxes painted with images taken from Duchamp’s The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass) (pictured).
